Know before you go

Visiting the wrong provider for a medical need can end up costing you more than you might think. To make sure you pay the lowest out-of-pocket costs:

  • See your doctor (primary care provider - PCP) first, unless s/he is unavailable, or the situation is a true emergency. Your doctor can help you decide the appropriate steps to seek care.
  • Visit a retail health clinic (such as local pharmacy) for accessible care that has extended hours.
  • Go to an urgent care center when a doctor is needed outside of normal hours – nights and weekends
  • Only go to an emergency room (ER) if there is an acute illness or trauma. Call 911 or go straight to the ER for life-threatening conditions.

Understand the Site of Care

When you see your doctor for an illness visit, you may be responsible for a small copay. If you go to the hospital for something similar, there may be added costs such as facility, laboratory and other fees that go straight to the facility to cover operational costs. You can avoid these fees when you understand the kind of care you need and where to get it. Check your benefits and understand the costs of each site of care before your next visit.
