What are National Provider Identifiers (NPIs)?
National Provider Identifiers (NPIs) are new and unique identification numbers that are required for all eligible health care providers. A single 10-digit NPI number will ultimately replace your current provider identification number(s) used to conduct standard transactions with health plans. While this may sound simple, the process to make this work is complex. The transition involves many internal and external steps, and if not handled properly, will affect the processing and payment of claims.
Should I notify CareFirst/CareFirst BlueChoice when I obtain my NPI?
Yes. Providers should provide us with their NPI as soon as it is received. We are adding NPI information to our records and will link the NPI to your legacy ID (your provider ID number(s) assigned by CareFirst/CareFirst BlueChoice). NPIs cannot be extracted from claims. As a result, you must submit your NPI information directly to our Provider Information & Credentialing Department. Please send your NPI as soon as possible. Also, be sure to share your NPI with other health care providers (and payers) with whom you do business.
Who can we contact if we have additional questions about how CareFirst and CareFirst BlueChoice will handle the NPI?
Please send your questions via e-mail to NPI@CareFirst.com. You may also refer to the Frequently Asked Questions page in this section.
