Meridia Voluntary Recalled

October 12, 2010

The FDA and Abbott Laboratories announced a voluntary recall of Meridia (sibutramine), a drug used for weight loss and weight management, due to clinical research indicating an increased risk of heart attack and stroke in patients who use this medication.

The findings of the research trial have demonstrated a 16% increase in serious cardiovascular events, including non-fatal heart attacks, non-fatal strokes, heart stopping and even death, in patients taking Meridia.

Patients taking this medication should stop and immediately consult their physician.
