New Effectiveness Warning for Plavix (Clopidogrel)

March 15, 2010

The FDA has issued a new boxed warning for Plavix, an anti-blood clotting medication used to reduce
the risk of heart attack, unstable angina, stroke and cardiovascular fatalities in patients with cardiovascular disease.

The new warning for Plavix, also known as clopidogrel, includes details on the effectiveness of this medication for patients who are poor Plavix metabolizers as well as information on available genetic testing to identify poor metabolizers.

Patients who cannot appropriately metabolize Plavix are advised to work with their physician to consider another type of anti-platelet medication to meet their needs.
