Important Boxed Warning Change for Exjade (Deferasirox)
Novartis Oncology and the FDA are issuing a boxed warning change for deferasirox, a drug used in the treatment of chronic iron overload. The new warning on the deferasirox label notes possible kidney, liver and gastrointestinal complications which could be fatal. Patients with advanced age, bone marrow disorders, underlying kidney or liver impairment or low blood platelet counts are at an increased risk. Patients taking this medication need to be closely monitored by a physician, including measurement of kidney, liver and digestive functions is recommended.
