Systane Free Liquid Gel Eye Drops Recalled
Systane Free Liquid Gel lubricant eye drops were recalled by the FDA and Alcon, Inc. on December 14, 2006. Consumers who have Systane Free Liquid Gel should immediately discontinue use of the product and return any unused portion to the manufacturer.
Eleven consumers have reported finding foreign material in their bottle – a material later identified as mold. To date, no illnesses or injuries have been linked to the mold. The recall only applies to this liquid gel formulation. The original formulation of systane lubricant eye drops and unit doses are safe for use and are not subject to this recall.
Bottles that are subject to the recall can be identified by locating the words "Free" and "Liquid Gel" on the product box or bottle. If these words are not on the bottle or box, the product is safe for use and is not subject to this recall. Consumers who are in possession of Systane Free Liquid Gel should be instructed to immediately discontinue use of the product and contact the manufacturer by calling 1-866-608-3936 or visiting www.systane.com.
To reduce the potential for contamination of eye drops, do not touch the tip of the bottle to the eye or allow anything else to touch the tip of the bottle, and always put the cap on the bottle immediately after use. Consumers who have concerns about the health of their eyes or who experience unusual eye symptoms, such as severe pain, loss of vision, or significantly increased sensitivity to light are advised to consult an ophthalmologist immediately.
