New Privacy Laws Affect My Account Users

September 4, 2009

To stay compliant with state and federal privacy laws, CareFirst will be making changes to My Account, the portion of our Web site that enables you to check the status of your claims and securely contact Member Services.

Effective September 12, 2009, members will see changes on how claims are viewed through My Account. State and Federal rules now mandate that adult dependents will only have access to claims information about themselves.

My Account will be updated to display only the names of the members whose information you are entitled to view under the privacy rules. Subscribers will be able to view claims for all persons on their policy.

Example: John Smith, the subscriber, is married to Mary and they have children. John can see claims for everyone on the policy because he is the subscriber. Mary can only see her claims and the claims of her children under age 17. Each child can only see his or her claims.
