How to Use the Online Provider Directory

How the Directory Works

Members can search for a provider several ways:

  1. Provider Name:
    Search for a specific medical provider.
  2. Medical Plan:
    Search for providers within a health plan network.
  3. Facilities:
    Search for types of facilities within a health plan network.
  4. Dental Plan:
    Search for dental providers within a network.
  5. Vision Plan:
    Search for vision providers within a network.
  6. Options Discount Programs:
    Search for providers who offer alternative therapies and wellness services. The networks listed in this section maintain their own provider directories.

If you are unsure which plan is yours:

  • Check your Member ID card.
• If you do not have it readily available, contact Member Services.

Search by Provider Name


* This search will list medical plans in which a provider participates.

  1. Go to the second box titled, Search by Provider Name.
  2. Enter a provider's last name in the box provided and click GO.
  3. Find your provider in the table.
  4. Click their name to view the plans they participate in.
  5. Click on a health plan to view more information about the provider.
  6. Click either the street address or Get Driving Directions link to access a map and driving directions.

Search Based on Your Medical Plan


  1. Go to the first box titled, Select a Provider Type and select Medical (first item listed).
  2. On the next page, you will see two boxes:
    • Select Your Medical Plan
    • Other Networks: The networks listed in this section maintain their own provider directories.
  3. Once you've located your health plan, click the button next to your network.
  4. Click Locate a Provider
  5. On the next page, select the type of provider you are searching for. You'll have four choices:
    • Primary Care • Specialists • OB/GYN • Behavioral/Mental Health.
  6. Click Continue

    *Depending on your network, there may be additional pages that further identify which plan within the network you belong.

Unsure Which Specialist You Need?
Select "What Specialist Do I Need" from the Solution Center that appears on the top right of every page.
Receive Faster Results
Select as many of the criteria as you can. The more you narrow your search, the faster results will be published.

On the next page, you'll see three steps. Only step two is required:

  1. Step One: Select a Specialty
    • Choose the type of provider you're looking for
      (Internal Medicine, Pediatrician, Oncologist, etc.).
  2. Step Two: Enter Zip or City/State (required)
    • Enter the zip code, or city/state where you'd like
      to find a provider. You may want to
      select a provider that's close to home or work.
    • Distance - Results will display providers within the number of miles from the zip code or city/state.
  3. Step Three: Optional Information
    • You can narrow your search to providers who speak a language other than English (default language is English).
    • You may also enter the provider's last name to see if your provider belongs to your network.

Select Continue to see your search results.

The Search Results Page:

  • Choose how you'd like the results listed on the page:
    • Sort by Distance or Alphabetically
    • Display Results: Determines how many listing appear per page. Choices include:
      • 10 per page • 25 per page • 50 per page • 100 per page
  • Create a Printed Directory
    • You may obtain a printable version of the search result by selecting Create a Printed Directory from the Search Results page. This creates a PDF file which can be printed.
  • Learn More About a Provider
    • Click the provider's name to access the Provider Details page. Here you will find more information about the provider such as office locations, additional languages spoken and (where available) certifications and schools attended.
  • Map and Driving Directions
  • Change PCP (if applicable)
    • Click Change PCP to change your Primary Care Physician (only applicable to plans requiring members to select a PCP).

Search for Facilities


  1. Go to the first box titled, Select a Provider Type and select Facilities (second item listed).
  2. On the next page, you will see two boxes:
    • Select Your Medical Plan
    • Other Networks: The networks listed in this section maintain their own provider directories.
  3. Once you've located your health plan, click the button next to your network.
  4. Click Locate a Provider
  5. On the next page, Select the type of Facility and Continue.

Search Based on Your Dental Plan


  1. Go to the first box titled, Select a Provider Type and select Dental.
  2. On the next page, Select the Dental Plan to which you belong.
  3. Click Continue.

    Note: CareFirst BlueChoice Dental (The Dental Network) maintains its own provider directory. Please contact The Dental Networkthem directly with questions regarding their Web site.

Narrowing your Search:

    • Choose the type of dentist you're looking for
      (General Dentist, Orthodontist, Oral Surgeon, etc.)
  2. Step Two: Enter Zip or City/State (required)
    • Enter the zip code, or city/state to find a provider. You may want to select a provider that's close to home or work.
    • Distance - Results will display providers within the number of miles from the zip code or city/state.
  3. Step Three: Optional Information
    • Providers may be sorted by language (default language is English).

Select Continue to see your search results.

Search Based on Your Vision Plan


All vision plans offered by CareFirst maintain their own provider directories. To find a vision provider:

  1. Go to the first box titled, Select a Provider Type and select Vision.
  2. On the next page, Select the Vision Provider you belong to.
  3. Click Continue and the vision plan's Web site will display.

Options Discount Programs:


Options is a free discount program for CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield members.

To find a participating provider:

  • Go to the first box titled, Select a Provider Type and select Options Discounts Programs (fifth item listed).
  • On the next page, select one of the following services:
    Acupuncture

    Guided Imagery
    Hearing Care Services
    Laser Vision Correction

Researching a Provider


  • Click Researching a Provider (link is located in the Solution Center on the right side of pages in the Online Provider Directory)
  • This page contains links to other Web sites that offers information about providers.
  • Some examples of organizations listed as resources include:

    • Local Medical Societies

Selecting a Primary Care Provider


The following health plans require their members to select a Primary Care Physician when enrolling:

  • CareFirst BlueChoice
  • Maryland Point of Service

Changing Your Primary Care Physician (PCP) (only available on plans that require a PCP)


  • The "Change PCP" feature is found on two pages:
    • Search Results: Page listing all providers who matched criteria entered
    • Provider Details: Page that loads after you select provider's name from Search Results.
  • On the Search Results page, click "Change PCP" to the right of the provider you'd like to begin using.
  • On the Provider Details page, click "Change PCP," located at the bottom of the page.
  • A form will display with the provider's information already entered in the top section.
  • Complete the rest of the form then click "Send."

Important Notes

  • New cards will be issued after the PCP change is processed.
  • Requests received on or before the 20th of the month will be effective the first day of the following month.
  • Requests received after the 20th will not be effective until after the end of the next full month.
    For example, changes received by Jan. 20 will be effective Feb. 1. Changes received on Jan. 21 will be effective March 1.

Maps and Driving Directions


  • Maps and Driving Directions are available for all providers.
  • To see a map of the area a provider is located, click the underlined street address listed under the provider's name.
  • Use the directional links and zoon to re-enter or change the map view.
  • For driving directions, click "Door to Door Directions." Enter an address, then click "Get Directions."
