OWINGS MILLS, MD (September 12, 2008) - CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield (CareFirst) now offers Maryland consumers a new low-cost dental coverage plan that emphasizes preventive care. The new Individual Select Preferred product offers access to a regional network of more than 3,400 providers through an affordable plan designed to help members maintain sound oral health. The American Dental Hygienists' Association estimates that $1 spent on preventive care can save up to $50 in restorative and/or emergency dental treatment.

"Regular dental check-ups are just as important to your overall health as routine visits to your doctor, a healthy diet or exercising," said Gregory A. Devou, Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer for CareFirst. "CareFirst now offers a dental product for the Individual market that gives members better choice and control over their coverage, and options that meet their needs and their budgets."

Members may choose coverage as stand-alone dental insurance or add it to their existing medical policies. The new offering covers 100 percent of preventive and diagnostic services, such as dental exams, x-rays, cleanings and other routine services, in-network. Members can receive additional savings on major dental procedures, including crowns, root canal therapy, bridges, and orthodontia by visiting a participating provider. Out-of-network benefits are also available for routine and preventive care.
