Michael R. Merson was named to the CareFirst, Inc. Board of Directors in January 2004, and elected chairman of the Board effective in July 2004. Mr. Merson is the founder and consultant for Michael Merson, LLC, working with various start-up companies in a variety of areas. He has a 30-year record of growth and development in the health care industry, capped by serving as President and CEO with Helix Health, Inc. (1987-1988), and President of MedStar Health (1998-1999). John M. Colmers was appointed to the CareFirst, Inc., Board of Directors in January 2004. He also serves on the CareFirst of Maryland, Inc. Board and was elected its chairman effective July 2004. He is a program officer with the Milbank Memorial Fund, and was formerly executive director of the Maryland Health Care Commission (MHCC). More information
Floretta Dukes McKenzie is a member of the CareFirst, Inc. Board as well as the GHMSI Board, to which she was originally elected to in 1993. She is Chairwoman and Chief Executive Officer of The McKenzie Group, Inc., an educational consulting firm to public and private organizations. Dr. McKenzie's career has been in education, serving from 1981 to 1988 as superintendent of the District of Columbia Public Schools.
Sister Carol Keehan is a member of the CareFirst, Inc. Board as well as the Board of GHMSI, which she first joined in 1993. She currently serves as Chair of the Mission Oversight Committee. Sister Carol became full-time Chair of the Board of Directors for the Sacred Heart Health System in Pensacola, FL on July 1, 2004. Prior to that, she served for 15 years as president and chief executive officer of Providence Hospital and Carroll Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, both in Washington, D.C.
William L. Jews is President and CEO of CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, the leading health care company serving more than 3.2 million members in the Mid-Atlantic region. He successfully guided the business combination of the former Blues Plans serving Maryland, the National Capital Area and Delaware under a not-for-profit holding company, CareFirst, Inc. Previously, he led Dimensions Health Corporation of Landover, MD; Liberty Medical Center; and Lutheran Hospital in Baltimore City. More information
Jon Shematek, MD has been CareFirst's Medical Director for Quality Improvement since 1997. He is board-certified in Pediatrics and Pediatric Cardiology and practiced medicine for 25 years before joining CareFirst. Dr. Shematek is recognized nationally as a leader in clinical quality. He has been an ordained minister in the Episcopal Church since 1989 and regularly participates in overseas medical missions.
