National Walk at Lunch DayNational Walk @ Lunch DaySM Overview

Americans are busy people. Between work and other commitments, there is little time for exercise. That’s why the first annual National Walk @ Lunch Day is designed to complement, not compete with, your busy lifestyle.

The inaugural National Walk @ Lunch Day last year enjoyed great success with tens of thousands of employees joining in from 46 states plus the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.

Participation is easy. Local Blue Cross and Blue Shield Plans from around the country, as well as businesses large and small, will encourage employees to wear comfortable shoes on Wednesday, April 30th, and participate in a company sponsored walk at lunchtime. The walk will not only provide a good chance to exercise during the work day, but it will also be an opportunity to learn more about the benefits of walking each day. Visit www.bcbs.com/walkatlunch to register for your local National Walk @ Lunch Day walk and to learn how walking can change your life.

National Walk @ Lunch Day is an extension of WalkingWorks®, a Blue company program created to help consumers live healthier lives and reduce unnecessary medical costs due to physical inactivity. The WalkingWorks program was developed with the Presidents Council on Physical Fitness and Sports.

The US Department of Health and Human Services estimates the cost to treat illness and chronic disease caused by inactive lifestyles is nearly $1,000 for every family in America, every year. Simply getting 30 minutes of moderate physical activity, such as a brisk walk, at least five times a week has significant health benefits, such as lowering the risk of developing cardiovascular disease, hypertension, type 2 diabetes and improving the health of muscles, bones, and joints.

Physical activity is vital to the well being of all Americans and National Walk @ Lunch Day is an opportunity for Americans to carve time out of their busy schedules to exercise and build a healthier community and country. Join us on Wednesday, April 30th, to begin walking towards a healthier America and a healthier you! Visit www.bcbs.com/walkatlunch to learn more.
