WalkingWorks® Program

Program Information

Walking Works Logo

The WalkingWorks® program shifts employees from "learning about" to "doing something about" their health. It's an effective way to promote a healthy worksite-based walking competition – at no cost to your company.

The program is simple, and we have outlined the details for you.

For 10 weeks, employees will track their steps or time spent walking on a daily basis by using a free, online tool. Employees will work towards pre-defined goals to increase their physical activity. To generate enthusiasm, you may decide to add incentives to the program to create healthy competition between departments, driving participation.

Benefits for Employers:

  • Offers a turnkey wellness solution to promote physical activity
  • Delivers results for low or no cost
  • Builds positive employee morale
  • Enhances long-term employee commitment to overall health and wellness

Benefits for Employees:

  • Incorporates physical activity into daily routine – easily and effectively
  • Tracks personal progress online
  • Offers support by allowing individuals to work toward pre-defined goals as part of a team

The Online Tracking Tool

Easy registration and tracking is available with our online tracking tool. The tool helps employees measure their success in reaching their program goal, while also providing employers with detailed reporting tools to measure the success of individuals, teams and the overall program. Communicate Program

Your employees need encouragement as they work towards their walking goals. We can provide you with an employer reference guide, e-mail templates and walking facts to help you communicate your program. Use any or all of these documents to develop ongoing messages to motivate your employees to achieve their goals and win the competition.

Be sure you order a participant guide for each person who registers for your WalkingWorks® program.

The participant guide contains the following:

  • Online registration instructions
  • Details on how to establish a walking baseline and benchmark
  • Walking logs to track progress
  • Goals for each week
  • Instructions for finding target heart rate
  • Stretching and strength training examples

To make designing and implementing your workplace wellness program as easy as possible, we offer pedometers – at no charge, for every employee participating in the walking program. Simply call your broker or CareFirst Representative to order (quantities are limited).

As with any program, it is important to tailor your WalkingWorks® program to meet your specific company needs. To help communicate the benefits of incorporating physical activity into your daily routine, we offer a variety of materials and resources. For example, our communication pieces encourage employees to use the stairs instead of the elevator or park farther away from the entrance to the company.

Encourage walking without a walking program

Don’t want to implement an entire walking program at your organization but still want to motivate employees to walk to improve their health? We have participant guides – for individuals and kids – to encourage more walking in your employees' daily routines, whether at home or at work.

Communication Resources

To help you take the first step with your WalkingWorks® program, we encourage you to use our promotional pieces to communicate your program.

Kick off your WalkingWorks® program by participating in the National Walk @ Lunch Day®, held Wednesday, April 29.
