Working to Make our Community a Healthier, Better Place to Live
For more than 60 years, people have looked to Blue Cross and Blue Shield of the National Capital Area to take the lead in helping to support the less fortunate members of our community. Volunteerism and
community giving are fundamental to our corporate philosophy.
In 1996, as in years past, BCBSNCA and its
associates acted upon the belief that by helping to make the people and neighborhoods in which we do business healthier, we create better places to live and work. Our associates donated nearly a quarter of a million dollars and thousands of volunteer hours to more than 76
organizations to help make a difference in the health and well-being of people in the Washington metropolitan area.
We raised and contributed $100,000 to the United Way Campaign, which supports hundreds of local charities. BCBSNCA President and CEO Larry Glasscock served as the Major Corporations Chairman of the United Way of the National Capital Area's 1996 annual campaign, helping to raise more than $21.5 million from local businesses.
Through the Super Fit Healthy All-Stars program, BCBSNCA presented the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Washington with a grant to implement a health and fitness program for thousands of young people, ages 6-14, living in the metropolitan area. Children and their families participated in health screenings, fitness activities, nutrition workshops and cooking classes focused on improving their health. We'll proudly
sponsor the program again in 1997.
As a corporate sponsor and team participant in AIDS Walk Washington, the largest AIDS fund-raiser in the mid-Atlantic states, we raised thousands of dollars to support the work of the Whitman-Walker Clinic and other local AIDS organizations. Whitman-Walker touches the lives of two out of every three people with AIDS in the Washington metropolitan area, providing medical care, social work, legal and housing services to people with AIDS.
In recognition of our commitment to the
community, the Washington, D.C. affiliate of the American Diabetes Association presented us with its 1996 "Corporation of the Year Award." BCBSNCA is the first local health care services company to receive this honor.
Together with the Leukemia Society of America's "Cure 2000" project and WMAL Radio, BCBSNCA associates participated in the most successful "dress down day" in the area to raise funds for research and treatment for people with leukemia.
With an eye on the next generation, we sponsored five middle school students as interns in the three-week summer program, "Do the Write Thing," an anti-violence campaign and essay contest held in the District of Columbia. BCBSNCA also invested in each intern's academic future by contributing to their college tuition trust funds.
BCBSNCA associates spread holiday cheer by donating clothing, winter coats, books and other gifts
to residents of three Washington-area organizations: Bright Beginnings, an inner city day care program for homeless children under age five; Sasha Bruce Youth-works, a home for runaway and troubled teens; and the Washington Nursing Facility, a nursing home with more than 300 residents, many of whom have no families and depend on Medicaid to pay for their medical care.
Our People Are Our Strength
BCBSNCA never loses sight of the fact that the driving force behind our strong commitment to the community is the dedication and generosity of our associates. We all work and play on the same team here, whether we're marching together in a charity fundraiser or enjoying a company picnic or holiday party. The company is committed to creating a positive working environment for our associates.
One great example is our new fitness center which opened with great fanfare in 1996 and now boasts a membership of more than 550. Associates can take exercise classes or work out on state-of-the-art fitness equipment in the 3,000-square-foot BeneFIT Center. Professional trainers staff the center to offer guidance and friendly encouragement.
Workplace enhancements didn't stop there. We're in the process of improving our corporate headquarters building, from reconstructing the parking garage to
renovating the cafeteria, in order to improve the
environment in which our associates work.
We also expanded the curriculum of our Center
for Continuous Learning (CCL). In 1996 the CCL grew in both scope and popularity. More than a
thousand associates enriched their knowledge of such diverse topics as computer training, personal finance, time management, and business writing. In 1997, the CCL program will offer more than 25 new courses
to associates.
