Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Maryland is a leading regional non-profit company working in partnership with its members to deliver health care that is effective, appropriate and affordable.         Established in 1937, our company this year marks its 60th anniversary. Throughout its history, service to customers has been our foremost priority and today our company serves nearly 1.4 million members in the Mid-Atlantic region.

        We offer care services through a variety of managed care and insurance products, including physician groups, health maintenance organizations and traditional health care indemnity plans. The company's concept of network-based access presents customers with a choice of care professionals throughout our market area that includes 1,500 primary care physicians, 17,500 affiliated primary care and specialty physicians and 2,500 dentists.

        Our customers are served by 3,200 Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Maryland employees located at nine administrative sites, six district offices and 31 clinical locations in Maryland. We deliver and manage care, insure the cost of care, and administer and deliver other health services. We also offer health insurance administration and management services to self-insured parties.

        We recognize that modern, effective health care is a complex process that requires a partnership of patients, primary care physicians and other care providers. We will continue to take the lead in working with our customers as well as physicians, hospitals and other care providers to develop new ways to assure delivery of the highest quality care, in the most appropriate setting, at an affordable price.
