Nearly 80,000 new members were added in the Washington area and 46,400 in Delaware during 2001. In June 2001, a 22-year-old woman in Bel Air, Maryland, became a CareFirst member to raise total membership over the 3 million mark.

Capital expenditures, a clear measure of the company’s confidence in its future, rose to $62.9 million last year, including significant investments related to the continuing effort to integrate the company’s several core computing systems for claims processing and handling. Additional investment was directed to other information management initiatives and to comply with privacy and data handling standards called for in the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
