Nearly 80,000 new members were added in the Washington
area and 46,400 in Delaware during 2001. In June 2001,
a 22-year-old woman in Bel Air, Maryland, became a CareFirst
member to raise total membership over the 3 million
mark.

Capital expenditures, a clear measure of the company’s
confidence in its future, rose to $62.9 million last
year, including significant investments related to the
continuing effort to integrate the company’s several
core computing systems for claims processing and handling.
Additional investment was directed to other information
management initiatives and to comply with privacy and
data handling standards called for in the Health Insurance
Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
